The information on this page is provided to assist students who are thinking about applying to Joan Lawman College to undertake a course. The information includes details on how the College or Education and Migration Agents may assist you with the application process. Details of opportunities available to students on how to get their previous qualifications and/ or skills recognised is also provided.
Students must read the Student Handbook and JLC website in full. Students are encouraged to contact the college at info@jlc.edu.au or Ph: +61 3 8669 1438 if you are unsure about any information included in the Handbook or have any questions. If you have an education agent, they may also be able to assist you with any enquiry.
Students are also encouraged to undertake research on living and studying in Australia prior to submitting an application
Student Handbook
Education Agents
Education agents promote various Australian education programs and institutions internationally and are a good way for students to find out relevant information and access support when applying to study in Australia. Agents are experienced in assisting international students apply for courses and Australian visas.
Most Education agents speak both English and the local language, so this makes the application process a lot simpler and generally easier for students and parents. Most do not charge for their services as they are paid commission from the institution you choose to attend. However, some agents do charge small amounts or offer additional services for which they charge.
Although able to assist in completing education and visa applications, Education agents are not licensed to provide migration advice.

Migration Agents
A migration agent can assist students with submitting their visa application and communicate with DHA on their behalf. Please note that students do not need to use a migration agent to lodge any kind of visa application.
Access & equity
Joan Lawman College staff treats all students fairly, equally and without discrimination. All staff activities and practice is guided by our Code of Conduct. Joan Lawman College provides access and equity to candidates with special learning needs.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
All candidates are provided with the opportunity to have their prior learning and experience assessed and gain recognition for this. This experience may have been gained from employment, previous formal training undertaken or life experiences. The RPL process will match a student¡¯s experience to the requirements in a unit of competency and assess if recognition can be granted.
Students may apply for RPL by submitting evidence of competency against the unit of competency performance criteria, knowledge and skills requirements. The RPL application form is available on request from the Training Manager.
Credit Transfer
Joan Lawman College recognises qualifications and statements of attainment issued by other Registered Training Organisations. Candidates who have successfully completed whole units of competency contained within one of our courses with another RTO can apply for credit transfer. Credit Transfer applications are processed free of charge.
Both processes allow the candidate to reduce the time and study load associated with achieving a qualification.
Students may apply for Credit Transfer by submitting a Credit Transfer application form along with original certificates/ statements of attainment to the Training Manager. The CT/RPL application form is available on request from the Training Manager.

** Please note that RPL and CT applications can only be considered for whole units of competency.
Pre Training Review
To ensure students are placed in a course with an appropriate delivery and assessment strategy we review students existing knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications. Students are asked to complete this Pre Training Review during the enrolment process by providing details of their existing knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications that are relevant to the course being applied for. Joan Lawman College will then review this information and communicate the outcome to applicants.
Language Literacy and Numeracy
All training and assessment is delivered in English. To ensure that we are placing students in an appropriate course that caters for their individual learning needs we assess applicants¡¯ language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills on application in accordance with our Enrolment policy and procedure.
We welcome applications form students with specific language, literacy and numeracy needs and encourage potential or current students to contact the Training Manager for further information. There may be the opportunity available to you for ¡°reasonable adjustment¡± concerning training assessment processes, depending on the level of support you require.
Unique Student Identifier
From the 1st January 2015 it is a regulatory requirement that every person undertaking a nationally accredited course at any RTO must secure a Unique Student Identifier (USI).
Joan Lawman College collects Unique Student Identifier (USI) data from each enrolled student to ensure compliance with this requirement.
Students are requested to supply their USI at enrolment. Students may instruct Joan Lawman College to collect the USI on their behalf by completing the relevant section on the Enrolment form.
